EB-5 stands for employment-based fifth preference category. It is one of several categories through the employment-based immigration process where foreign nationals can pursue a green card. It is appealing for several reasons but primarily because it allows the foreign nationals to pursue a green card through investment without sponsorship from an employer. It requires a minimum investment of 1,050,000 which can be lowered to 800,000 if the investment is in a Targeted Employment Area (TEA). Along with the principal investor, the investor’s foreign national dependent family members, including the spouse and (unmarried) children under the age of 21, can also obtain green cards through an EB-5 investment.
